KMNW was established in December 2002 by me, Tony Bradley. Initially trained by the Israeli Krav Maga Federation and the International School of Krav Maga, I have also trained with leading representatives from the Krav Maga Association of America and the Israeli Krav Maga Association. Since qualifying as a Instructor of Krav Maga in 2002 I have continued to train, learn and teach Krav Maga along with other Israeli systems such as Kapap in both Israel and the UK.

I became involved in Israeli Martial Arts over 10 years ago after being confronted by three assailants (one armed with a bottle) in Manchester city centre one evening. Although only a couple of minor blows were exchanged and the bottle was thrown rather than used to strike me with, it changed my way of thinking. Until then, I had always believed that I had the skills to be able to defend myself and others in a violent confrontation. However, due to the numbers involved on this occasion, I found myself ill prepared. Fortunately, I managed to defend myself and flee the scene with no serious harm done.

Despite having studied karate and other traditional martial arts for a number of years and having trained in boxing during my time in the British armed forces, I realised that none of these disciplines really equipped me with the techniques or mental training necessary to defend myself adequately, particularly against multiple and possibly armed attackers.

This prompted me to find a new discipline, something more suited to real-life situations, something that was effective and easy to learn but, more importantly, something that made sense. I tried various self-defence systems, but each failed to deliver.  They either lacked proper teaching or the effectiveness of the techniques depended on numerous factors; for example, it might only work if the attack came from a certain angle, or if the attacker was not significantly bigger than you, or if there was only one attacker.

Then I heard about another system, one that was born out of necessity to protect and one that proves itself each and every day in one of the worlds most hostile climates. Whether your civilian, law enforcement or military, both Krav Maga and Kapap are proven systems.

Footnote

For some time now Krav Maga has become a buzz word in the self-defence community. Instructors and clubs recognise that the name alone attracts students looking for an effective and easy to learn self-defence system and as such, particularly over the last year the "British this" and the "Association of that" along with the "Federation of all being" have formed in an attempt to officialize their clubs and to give credence to their systems. In the world of martial arts and self-defence there is a great deal of illusion and fakery. Even the various Federations and Associations born in Israel argue amongst themselves with regards to each others qualifications to teach Krav Maga and as such irregardless of paying £5.00 or £50.00 all students should check the qualifications of A) their instructors, B) their clubs and C) their Federations/Associations. Recently during a conversation about our next trip to Israel a new student told how he was gutted to had just missed out on some Krav Maga Training in some European country. I had to remind the student Krav Maga does not come from Europe. It comes from Israel in the Middle East, one of the most openly contested regions in the world and a hotbed for terror. If you want to train Krav Maga go to source! if you cant go to source then make sure your club or instructor does! Krav Maga isnt just techniques, its a mind set and attitude.

In the Israeli martial arts it is said 'It is better to remain a student of reality than a master of illusion.
